Arts and Crafts Tiles Underground

At the recent Arts and Crafts Society of CNY Winter Party, members Joe and Claire Sturr discussed a trip to New York City, when they saw marvelous tiles installed in several New York City Subway stations. Tiles by Arts and Crafts tile manufacturers Grueby, Rookwood, Heins and LaFarge can be found in stations across lower Manhattan.

The Sturrs were so impressed with what they saw in the Subway, they did further research on the subject, and they highly recommend the following books:

Along the Way MTA Arts for Transit by Sandra Bloodworth, and William S. Ayres

High Line: The Inside Story of New York City’s Park in the Sky by Joshua David, Robert Hammond

Grove Park Inn Arts and Crafts Conference

This week the twenty-fifth annual Grove Park Inn Arts and Crafts Conference opens in Asheville, North Carolina. Scholars, dealers and enthusiasts of the Movement will come from all over the globe to attend three-days and nights of presentations, exhibitions and small group discussions. On the conference’s Web site, director Bruce Johnson states at this conference “you have the opportunity to do more, hear more and see more Arts & Crafts in three days than the average person could in an entire year.”

Photos from the 2011 National Preservation Conference, Buffalo NY

In October 2011 more than 2,000 people from all 50 states gathered in Buffalo, New York for the four-day National Preservation Conference held from October 19 through 21. The 65th annual conference, which was sponsored by the Washington, D.C.-based National Trust for Historic Preservation, was the first time the event had been held in Buffalo.

In addition to talks and panel discussions, attendees had the opportunity to tour the Guaranty Building, Darwin Martin House Complex, Richardson Olmsted Complex and the Roycroft Campus in East Aurora, as well as sites usually closed to the public, such as Frank Lloyd Wright’s Walter V. Davidson House and the William R. Heath House.

Mary Tillinghast: An Artist Illuminated

Art glass panel designer Mary Tillinghast (1845-1912), who once worked with designers John LaFarge and Candace Wheeler before establishing her own studio, is the subject of a section of a recent New York Times Art and Design column. Kent Watkins has been researching the life and work of his distant cousin, Miss Tillinghast, and plans to self-publish a monograph on the artist in the near future. Also of note, ACSCNY long-time friend, art glass historian and restoration expert Julie Sloan is quoted in the article.

The First Presbyterian Church in Syracuse, New York is home to several of Ms. Tillinghast’s outstanding works: “The Baptism of Jesus,” “Musical Saints: Easter Window” and “New Jerusalem.”

Byrdcliffe Exhibit in NYC

For our members in the New York City area or those headed there this month, the New York Times reported that the D. Wigmore Fine Art gallery in Manhattan is holding an exhibition of work from the Byrdcliffe Arts and Crafts community’s later period called, “The Woodstock Story Told in Paintings, Photography, Sculpture and Ceramics.” The show features sculpture and ceramics by various artists, metalwork by William Hunt Diederich and paintings by George Bellows and George Ault among others. Art Glass Masterpieces in Rochester, NY

Alfred Stieglitz Collection at the Metropolitan Museum

For those of you who are in the New York City area or are planning a visit around the holiday season, The Metropolitan Museum is holding an exhibition of art and photography from the collection of iconic Twentieth Century influential photographer, publisher and critic Alfred Stieglitz. “Stieglitz and His Artists: Matisse to O’Keeffe” is on view now through January 2, 2012.
